Envy has the characteristic of resenting other people’s successes. The envious always become sad and unhappy, because it is the function of envy to make them so. Envy works as a fetter that binds us to suffering because it is rooted in aversion towards others’ successes. It can create major damage in relationships between family members and friends. If allowed to grow, it can lead to intense jealousy and hatred, and ego-driven competitiveness. Envy can be subdued by developing mental elements of loving-kindness and gladness.
